Strong opinions, weakly held

Month: May 1999 (page 10 of 14)

Propaganda or denial? You be the judge.

MacWeek has a nice syndicated story from the the Register covering Apple’s operating system plans, as told at the WWDC.

I don’t know about you, but I find Fast Company magazine to be hard to stomach.

Cameron Barrett has written a long piece about web logs, and why he’s getting out of the web logging game for the time being.

P. J. Huffstutter has a great story in the LA Times business section about the big bucks (and big egos) in the video game industry. The article quotes John Romero (formerly of Id, now of Ion Storm) as saying, “I am a god.” One wonders why a god can’t ship a game.

Here’s an etiquette tip for list owners — don’t munge the reply to address of email messages sent to the list. If you don’t know why this is a bad thing, check out “Reply-To” Munging Considered Harmful. (This article is of interest to mailing list administrators and subscribers.)

Adam Engst offers a primer on mailing list etiquette in this week’s TidBits. He leaves out the most important rule, though, which is that you should never, ever, under any circumstances, send email messages formatted in anything other than plain text. Nor should you use lame things like VCards that send an attachment with every message, nor should you send attachments to mailing lists at all.

I have high hopes for http://internet-pioneers.org/.

One area of interest to me of late is Java Servlets. I’ve been looking for a cross-platform Web application development platform which is as open as possible. The list of products which support servlets is growing rapidly, and Java is approaching the point where it interfaces with nearly everything.

Here’s a judgement that sends a message. Unfortunately, the message is, “Jurors in Alabama are idiots.”
