Strong opinions, weakly held

There’s another romance novel out there with Rafe in the title — The Return of Rafe MacKade. Again, not about me.

Apropos of nothing: I now subscribe to 16 unofficial channels at My Netscape. I don’t subscribe to any of the official channels, I still use My Yahoo to check on the weather, sports scores, and the latest headlines. By the way, the list of unofficial channels is growing rather nicely.

Jon Katz has written about weblogs for Free!. The bad news is he didn’t mention rc3.org. The good news is, he didn’t say rc3.org was kind of boring. He did speak well of friends of rc3.org PeterMe (who’s back online, by the way, after some DNS troubles), and CamWorld.

Microsoft has formed a group internally to counter Linux. What’s the matter? Afraid of a few sleep deprived college students and European hackers? If Microsoft had real guts, they’d be working with Linux instead of trying to kill it. It would be foolish to expect any kind of leadership from Microsoft though; they really don’t care about the industry, other than as a group of competitors they have crushed or will crush.

In his wrapup of events in the “open source” software world, Andrew Leonard discusses the controversy surrounding the term “open source” itself. Apparently, two groups are arguing over which one owns the trademark for the name. Ironic isn’t it?

http://www.notsobighouse.com offers an interesting alternative to conspicuous consumption. Now what we need is notsogasguzzlingcar.com and notmoreinterestedindaytradingthandoingwork.com.

Have you been to Dave’s Personal Library Page? Unless Dave owns the copyright to all of his “personal resources,” he’s a thief. I take consolation in the fact that this lame jerk makes his money by teaching people how to use Microsoft products. The link to a page promising “Many reasons Microsoft’s NT is your business choice” is broken. There’s a surprise.

SGI seems to be making good on its commitment to Linux. Not only are they looking to hire Linux kernel developers, but they’re also making their XFS journaled file system technology available to Linux developers. They’ve already made the jump to the Wintel platform, I wonder if they’re looking for a real operating system to run on those fancy Intel-based workstations they’re making … you know, one that supports multiple users.

Does anyone know what happened to PeterMe?

It looks like George Bush, Jr. can’t take a joke. Bush’s attorneys are trying to get the Federal Election Commission to force the guy who runs the spoof site to register as a political committee or take the site down. How about the third option, just hosting it in another country? By the way, how many people would have heard of http://www.gwbush.com if Bush’s henchmen didn’t make a stink about it?
