Strong opinions, weakly held

Month: November 2000 (page 7 of 9)

Eazel has announced the first two services they’ll be providing. I’m underwhelmed.

The best election Web site I found last night was Voter.com. Their page loaded fast all night, and their coverage is detailed and easy to follow. CNN’s site was very slow (due to its great popularity, I’m sure), and the results were harder to get to. The pulldown menu of state results at Voter.com was incredibly useful.

The Slate staff discloses who they voted for individually, with the reasons behind it. Not only are there lots of interesting reasons why they voted for one candidate or another, but it also enables one to more accurately gauge the bias behind articles you read there. All journalists should do this.

Before you vote today, you might want to take one last look at who’s financing the campaigns of the people you’re going to vote for at Opensecrets.org. And if you’re looking for a reason why Bush caught up with Gore in the polls, it might have something to do with the fact that he’s spent 70 million more dollars on his campaign than Gore. Strangely, I never see the pundits talking about that. Oh, and this chart sheds some light on which party corporate America counts on for the legislation they need.

Some Republicans have called the revelation of George W. Bush’s irrelevant DWI arrest back in 1976 a “dirty trick” by the Democratic camp. An article over at Tom Paine provides a real example of a dirty trick in politics that actually cost Grover Cleveland the 1888 Presidential election. A Republican operative fabricated a letter that inflamed the Irish in New York, costing Cleveland that state and the election.

Think of it as the anti-“West Wing”: Trey Parker and Matt Stone (of “South Park” fame) are working on a sitcom about the next President. Whoever wins today will be the subject of the sitcom, which premieres in February. Let’s hope it works out better for them than “BASEketball.”

If you were worried about me endorsing Nader but voting for Gore, you can rest easy knowing that here in North Carolina, Nader doesn’t even appear on the ballot. So, it’s give me Al Gore or give me death. What a chilling thought.

The baseball debate between Gore and Bush posted at the Major League Baseball profiles the two candidates in the Presidential election perfectly. Gore is smart and knowledgable, but he can’t resist showing that off. By the end of the article, I was thinking “Just shut up, Al.”

The barrage of political links continues apace: Molly Ivins explays why we must not elect George W. Bush. (The story will disappear soon, but not before you have a chance to read it and vote against Bush, tomorrow.)

I’m not very impressed with Michael Moore’s open letter to George W. Bush. His open letter to Al Gore brought up substantial problems with Gore’s policies and political conduct in the past, his open letter to George W. Bush reads more like the transcript for one of those nasty phone messages the Republicans like to leave on my answering machine.
