Strong opinions, weakly held

CBS Marketwatch reports that Salon is expected to receive a delisting notice from NASDAQ in June.

I’m semi-obsessed with the debate over globalization. It’s such a complex issue that it can’t be distilled down to a simplistic “it’s good” or “it’s bad,” despite the fact that many people on both sides would do just that. Right now, I’m still trying to get a grasp on the points of contention; this Economist article is a decent starting point.

Following up on last week’s item about Dr. Dre, Dan Hartung points out that PricewaterhouseCoopers are, in fact, the bad boys of the public accounting industry. This also led me to remember that Willie Nelson sued PWC for $45 million after the government busted him for underpaying his taxes for over a decade. It looks like PWC also ran into trouble with Elton John.

Today on Morning Edition, the final story was about changes at the Smithsonian Institution. These changes will include the elimination of the Conservation and Research Center, which researches endangered species in hopes of successfully reintroducing them into the wilderness, and the Smithsonian Center for Materials Research and Education, which studies the preservation and restoration of recent and ancient artifacts. The justification for eliminating these research centers seemed pretty dubious to me. The federal government funds the Smithsonian to the tune of about half a billion dollars a year. When you compare that amount to the $1.5 billion helicopter carriers Trent Lott is buying for the Navy whether it asks for them or not, it seems totally insane for the Smithsonian to be eliminating programs instead of getting the money it needs to continue them.

The End of Free is an interesting project. Check it out.

Google Restores Deja View: “Google certainly did optimize the search function, and I have found all the posts I made when I was 18. I cannot believe what an absolute, utter asshole I was back then.” — Mike Milgen. Boy am I glad that a lot of my earlier ‘net communcations aren’t archived anywhere.

I don’t know why I find this interesting, but I do. Rapper/rap producer Dr. Dre got a $15 million dollar settlement from Big (what is it, 4 now?) accounting firm Pricewaterhouse Coopers after they allowed his associates to fleece him out of millions of dollars. You’d think that a massive, well respected accounting firm could successfully manage the accounts of a rapper, but that’s obviously not the case. Kind of makes you wonder what kind of job they’re doing for their corporate clients.

Timothy Noah provides some tips on how the recent Sopranos coinage about “disrespecting the Bing” should be used in everyday conversation.

Up for a good laugh? Conservatives are complaining because the Dubya White House is unfair to white men. That’s right, they didn’t elect him to hire women and minorities, those jobs are for white guys, preferably rich ones, I imagine.

Here’s something else that’s interesting: Google appears to be eschewing the idea of an ad sales force and just letting people set up their own ads and pay for them with a credit card. This seems brilliant to me. If Internet ad rates are dropping like a rock, why bother with expensive account representatives, banner ad creation, and all that other crap? Just let people type in their ads and pay for them in small lots.
