Strong opinions, weakly held

Month: May 2001 (page 6 of 9)

I added “one year ago today” and “two years ago today” links to the little grey nav box in the right hand column. The links are mainly there so that I can look back and laugh at myself. Try them out, maybe you’ll laugh at me too.

What’s up with going retro these days? There’s a “one year ago” link on Metafilter now. Meg’s talking about reading old content, and Steve is talking about using his weblog as a way to preserve his personal history. I went back and read some old rc3.org content, and the main thing I came away with is that my proofreading sucked. I’m going to steal Matt’s “one year ago” idea because the software I wrote to maintain this site makes it awfully simple to do.

I added links to my Amazon wish list, Launchcast station, and Advogato user page to the right hand column. Don’t lie, you care.

Unsurprisingly, the special gift legislation Billy Tauzin prepared for the RBOCs successfully escaped from committee and will now be unleashed in the House of Representatives for a floor vote. I’m certain that enough cash has been doled out by the RBOCs to ensure passage there as well. The more I learn about government, the more worthless I realize the House really is.

Tim O’Reilly made an insightful post on the FSB mailing list about open source zealotry and other ways to look at recent Microsoft activity. I’m envious of Tim O’Reilly — he always gets to be the voice of reason.

Hey, check it out, real investigative reporting: the Red Herring looks at the madcap IPO market of the past couple of years in a 7 part series that I promise to read once, you know, I have time.

More patent trouble: Worlds.com has been granted a patent on certain aspects of 3D client-server environments. The patent could apply to MMORPGs like EverQuest, Asheron’s Call, and a whole spate of similar upcoming games.

After a semi-exhaustive search, I’ve discovered that lowly vim is the best editor for JSP files. I’d love to use Emacs to edit them, but html-helper-mode is semi-bizarre, especially when you add JSP into the mix (I’ll never understand how indenting works in hhm). I realize that HomeSite is the conventional choice, but I’m of the opinion that it’s a bloated piece of crap.

So what’s up with all this talk of the energy crisis? How can it be that nobody was talking about the energy crisis until Dubya was elected? If I had time, I’d do real research on this, but since I don’t I wonder if you guys can. If anyone knows of good links pointing to evidence of an energy crisis or the lack of an energy crisis, please forward them along. (My preconceived notion on this is that Dubya wants to manufacture an energy crisis to help out his buddies in the energy and power generation sectors.)

So, we’re facing a looming deadline at work, and our product is in QA. Unfortunately, my singleminded devotion to fixing defects has caused me to neglect this site a bit. Expect for updates to be sparse for the rest of the week, I’m not even finding time to read Today’s Papers.
