Strong opinions, weakly held

Month: May 2001 (page 7 of 9)

I couldn’t get to Yahoo Travel last night, and it turns out I can blame that on a blackout. It’s going to be a fun summer, isn’t it?

Mozilla 0.9 is out. Here’s a link to the release notes.

If you’ve ever wondered what tools they use internally at Yahoo, skip down to the (improperly named) Public Domain Software section of the Yahoo! Contributors page. They don’t credit Apache, but I’ve heard that Yahoo does, in fact, run a heavily modified version of Apache as their Web server.

The Smithsonian’s Conservation Research Center (mentioned here the other day) has been granted a stay of execution due to political fallout from the announcement that it would be closed.

RIP Clifton Keith Hillegass, the creator of Cliffs Notes. Quoth Mr. Hillegass: “A thorough appreciation of literature allows no shortcuts.”

Gore Vidal is going to attend Timothy McVeigh’s execution. Apparently the two became friends after McVeigh read one of Vidal’s articles in Vanity Fair.

The latest interview in the Well’s public inkwell.vue conference is a group affair with zinesters and bloggers. I’m not mentioned in the introduction (a glaring oversight, I know), but I’ll probably crash the party.

The continuing foreign rights disaster that is the Dubya regime took another turn for the worse yesterday when the United States was voted off the Human Rights Commission at the United Nations for the first time ever. Sudan, Pakistan, and Sierra Leone are in, and we’re out (the representatives from our region are Sweden, France, and Austria). Dubya, you suck.

I confess to not taking Matt Drudge seriously at all. Unfortunately, there are thousands of people who do. Rogers Cadenhead sent along a note indicating that Drudge is up to his same old tricks. Please, if you know someone who actually thinks that the Drudge Report is a real news site, set them straight before it’s too late.
