According to a New York Times article, torture seems to be in play as an accepted technique for interrogation once again. I’ve already pointed to a number of articles in the Washington Post that discuss the CIA’s wrangling to have suspects tortured by having them held in countries other than the United States. The question one must ask themselves when they consider whether torture is acceptable is whether the cost of torturing innocents makes up for the benefits of torturing the guilty. Currently the US government has 1100 people in custody associated with the 9/11 attacks, most of whom are certainly innocent. Which of them would it be OK to torture?
