Remember the good ole’ days, when everybody did javascript and MS did jscript?
We’ll never see days like that again (hopefully).

Maybe I’m remembering it wrong, but … wasn’t that Sun?

It was Sun, and they were right. It just turned out that it wasn’t just Java that delivered on “write once, run anywhere,” but also HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, Ruby on Rails, Python, Perl, Flash, etc etc. There are still interesting platform-specific applications, but we live in the write once run anywhere era these days.

I guess everybody does something different with their computers. It’s awfully hard to imagine Web-based versions of things like Photoshop, Final Cut or even iTunes.

True, I don’t see myself replacing Eclipse or TextEdit with web apps, either. But it’s not just about web apps. Larger and larger chunks of desktop applications are written in languages that are portable. A huge chunk of Adobe Lightroom is written in Lua, and we’ll see more applications headed that direction.

Not that hard, evidently.
