Here’s a map of the United States with the names of the states replaced with the names of countries with a similar GDP. Pretty interesting reference when reading about other countries. I was surprised that Saudi Arabia and Tennessee have roughly the same GDP.

That Tennessee/Saudi thing seems… unbelievable.

The GDP of Saudi Arabia is $286 billion. The oil business makes up almost HALF of their economy. Just looking around for a few minutes I’ve seen Saudi Arabia as high as ~$360 billion in GDP (IMF & World Bank). https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/sa.html#Econ
The GDP for TN is $207 Billion. http://www.bea.gov/newsreleases/regional/gdp_state/gsp_newsrelease.htm
I really don’t know the methodology they used on that map. It would seem like MA at $300 billion would be a closer match or perhaps WA at $253 billion.
I’m sure that the map would be nearly so interesting if it paired up TN and Chile ($207 – CIA) or the Czech Republic ($210 – World bank)
For a good comparison of GDP by source (IMF, World Bank and CIA Factbook) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(PPP)

I bet Texas loves being equated with Canada, no matter what the context is.

Imagine how the Canadians must feel.
