&lt;p&gt;Not quite.  Chris Wilson has said that the HTML 5 DOCTYPE will trigger IE8 mode, not the latest and greatest.  When IE9 comes around, HTML 5 will trigger &lt;em&gt;its&lt;/em&gt; backward-compatibility mode (IE9 pretending to be IE8).  So that is just a game of &quot;kick the can&quot;, not a real solution.&lt;/p&gt;
