Reading further down into that piece, the Potemkin food distribution stations were misreported — but the Potemkin setups of construction equipment in Mississippi were real. And then there’s this, via Billmon, about trained rescue fire crews who went to the area and were given nothing to do for days — until Dubya needed someone to stand behind him for a photo op. Their long-term task, as assigned by FEMA: they’re being trained to hand out flyers. (via Billmon).

There’s definitely enough damning evidence that’s true that people don’t need to repeat things that aren’t true. The only reason the rumor had such legs is that it’s completely believable.
