Slate has the inside scoop on how to pick up a MacArthur grant. As a computer programmer in the South working for a private company, my odds seem pretty low. Although think about how much better the world would be if I received a MacArthur grant and could just work on rc3.org and free Web tools and instruction for five years. Certainly I’m a better investment than the deadbeat Manhattan artists who are often rewarded.


The other shoe has dropped in Microsoft’s ongoing war with Sun over Java: Microsoft is dropping Visual J++ from the next version of Visual Studio, and adding a C# tool in its place. No surprise there. Visual J++ was behind by several versions of the JDK anyway.


I sure wish I were going to the O’Reilly O’Reilly’s Open Source Convention. There are tons of interesting presentations on the schedule.
