c’t is probably the best computer magazine in the world, too bad it’s in German. They do publish English translations of some of their more interesting stories on the Web. For example, currently they’re running a design comparison of the AMD Athlon and the Pentium III. This is just the kind of geeky stuff I wish more magazines published.
Not only has andover.net filed for to go public, but they’re going to be the next victim of the OpenIPO format. They’re also a wonderful testament to how companies remake themselves to catch the prevailing wind. They’re a “Linux company,” now that Linux is the hot buzzword and they shelled out for Slashdot. Of course, the burning question everyone wants the answer to is whether after the IPO Robin Miller will still drive his limo (for all I know he’s just a meager freelancer, and won’t make a dime).
Yesterday, Salon ran an article about Don Knuth, one of the computer science pioneers that fascinate me so. Somewhere on my too large to do list is reading the first three volumes of his books on algorithms.
Who cares if George W. Bush, Jr. did a lot of coke during his period of youthful self-indulgence? The big problem is that he just isn’t very bright. I thought that his self-contradiction on drug issues was due to hypocrisy, but after reading this article, I realized that he just can’t remember what he’s said and done in the past.
This is where I go when I want to read reviews of Nikon photographic gear.
Advice to Amiga fans: give up.
The Economist has a rundown of the hopes and fears surrounding Windows 2000 this week. In the same breath, they talk about the “withering of the Unix skills base” and the growth of Linux. For all intents and purposes, Linux and Unix are the same thing. There are more Unix users now than there have ever been. The idea that Unix is dying is a meme that should have died long ago.
Updates may be sparse over the next few days as I’m forced to deal with hurricane Floyd.

Disgruntled readers are chattering about the fact that this month’s Wired is one of the fattest ever, mainly because it’s chock full of advertising, presumably raked in by their new owners, Conde Nast. As a service to Wired subscribers who read this page (an illustrious group of which I am no longer a member), I’ll provide you with a link to the seminal October 1995 Suck essay, How to Read Wired Magazine.
