Microsoft is trying to bully Slashdot with the evil Digital Millenium Copyright Act.

The Butte, Montana Copper Kings (a minor league baseball team) have declared July 7 as Rocker Awareness Day, and are offering free admission to the game on that day to people from groups John Rocker insulted, as well as residents of Rocker, Montana.

Microsoft’s proposed remedies in the anti-trust case are pretty cheeky. Of course, if you don’t think you did anything wrong, why would you punish yourself harshly?

Yahoo is expanding to offer domain registration and web hosting. They offer servers running Red Hat Linux, FreeBSD, and Windows NT. They don’t offer bulk hosting (a la pair.com), just dedicated servers.

There’s a good explanation on the usage of XML/XSL with Java for web publishing in this free chapter from the upcoming O’Reilly book Java and XML.

Move over MySQL? An investor has pumped 25 million bucks into Great Bridge, a company formed to back open source database PostgreSQL. PostgreSQL provides a much fuller SQL implementation than MySQL, and supports lots of other key features of relational databases that MySQL left out.

The guys at DigitalCreations have discovered a Web security hole that allows malicious people to use redirects to cause users to unknowingly perform actions on sites that they have access to. I need to look into this hole more deeply before I understand it, but it sounds like it would be fairly difficult to exploit.

Tim O’Reilly on the troubles at LinuxCare and taking a broad view of “service” when it comes to building a company around open source software. There’s a lot of cool historical information in the article, and some great suggestions for people in the software business.

If you thought the Etoy debacle was bad, wait until you hear this. Mattel’s lawyers have ordered Matt Levallee to hand over the domain name mattl.com. Give me a freaking break.
