The story of ‘Big Ears’, a huge NSA listening post in Germany, is fascinating on many levels. At one time, it was used to monitor military activity behind the Iron Curtain, but now that the threat from Russia and its allies has subsided, the NSA hasn’t decomissioned the station. They’re using it to look out for terrorists, money laundering, corruption, and I guess whatever else the NSA finds interesting. The Europeans believe the NSA is using it for commercial espionage to benefit US corporations, which I don’t believe, but at the same time, one has to question whether the station still belongs there. I doubt the US government would allow Germany or France to build a monstrous listening station in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to monitor activities here and in Canada.
