Strong opinions, weakly held

Keith Packard is adding anti-aliasing to X. It’s about time — anti-aliasing was the number one item on my “Unix on the desktop” wish list. I just can’t bear to browse the Web under X right now, but hopefully with the release of Mozilla and the incorporation of anti-aliasing into XFree86, that will change. (Thanks, Wes.)

There’s an article on C# in MSDN Magazine. The article provides yet another simplistic overview of the new features in C#, and takes a gratuitous swipe at Java, but doesn’t do a clear job of explaining why C# is better than Java. I guess it’s targetted at people who live in the Microsoft world and would never consider using Java anyway.

AOL has thrust the second preview release of Netscape 6 into the world on the heels of last week’s barrage of bad press for the Mozilla project. By all accounts, it’s slow, broken, and crashes frequently. One wonders why Netscape opted to package what they have so far into another branded preview release, given that it delays the final release and just makes them look bad. The browser isn’t even feature complete yet. If you do want to check out Mozilla, download a milestone release at mozilla.org … the Netscape branded stuff is a waste of your time.

There’s a lot of talk about how Joseph Lieberman is a conservative Democrat, and I guess he is, but he still managed to earn a 57% rating from the ACLU last year, and has earned a 100% rating from the League of Conservation Voters for five of the last seven years.

The Industry Standard has an article on precedents for the disruption currently being caused by Napster. Examples include the player piano and the VCR.

Brenda Laurel and Tog have joined the Nielsen-Norman group, giving them a stable of four computer industry rock stars to hire out for user interface design. I like Tog as a pundit much better than Nielsen, whose grating style drives me nuts. Brenda Laurel is famous mostly for starting a company that produced games for girls. It was purchased by Mattel.

Al Gore will select Connecticut Senator Joseph Lieberman as his running mate, according to MSNBC. Lieberman is a very courageous choice, and quite possibly, a brilliant one. Lieberman is an orthodox Jew, and is well known for taking strong moral stands. One of Gore’s biggest problems thusfar has been his association with Bill Clinton. Choosing Lieberman as a running mate clearly distances him from Clinton in a big way.

Brown Orifice HTTPD exploits a nasty hole in the Java security model and the JVM in Netscape Communicator. It’s an applet that runs a Web server on your local machine when the browser executes it, and sends arbitrary files to people who request them. You can now feel free to turn off Java in your browser.

OK, cr.yp.to is the best domain name I’ve ever seen.

If you have the implementation overview documents for Microsoft Passport, could you email them to me? I’d like to look them over without registering at the Passport site.
