Strong opinions, weakly held

Month: May 2002 (page 11 of 11)

It occurred to me today that the French Presidential election between Jean-Marie Le Pen and Jacques Chirac echoes the 1991 Louisiana gubernatorial race, which pitted well-known crook Edwin Edwards against well-known racist David Duke. Perhaps Louisianians can send the French all of their left over “Vote for the crook — it’s important” bumper stickers. Hey, look, the Houston Chronicle ran a column that says the very same thing yesterday. I promise I came up with this idea on my own first.

Some internet broadcasters are observing a day of silence today to draw attention to their fight against high licensing fees that the record companies want to impose on them. They’re directing listeners to the Save Internet Radio! site. (The two stations I listen to, Radio Paradise, and Texas Rebel Radio are participating.)

Looks like there’s yet another local interests versus global content controversy brewing. The German rail system, Deutsch Bahn, is suing Google for providing links to and caching articles from an outlawed publication that discusses railroad sabotage. (The lawsuit is off. Tara sent me this article which says that both Google and AltaVista caved in.)

There’s a Mozilla Calendar project. I did not know that.

Over at Advogato, Simon St. Laurent has posted a huge batch of links covering an ongoing discussion of web services. Maybe I’ll have time to dig through them today …
