John Sidgmore, Worldcom’s CEO, gave a particularly slimy press conference yesterday. His basic lines of discussion were that Worldcom is too big and important to die (he even played the national security card) and that all of its problems were caused by the nasty CFO, who was fired. He blamed the problems on a “past administration,” despite the fact that Sidgmore himself was COO during that past administration. I’ve been searching for a full transcript of his comments, but haven’t had much luck. There’s a webcast on the Worldcom site, but I’m not going to waste my time watching that. Anyway, Worldcom almost certainly deserves to die, but I don’t see the government letting that happen.
