Strong opinions, weakly held

Katherine Harris

You’ll be interested to know that Katherine Harris has had to resign as Florida Secretary of State because she doesn’t understand Florida state election law. No, not the laws that pertain to presidential elections, but those that apply to her own candidacy for US Congress. She missed a deadline for filing a document that was required for her to remain as Secretary of State while she ran for another office, and thus had to resign. The irony is thick.

Stupidity

Here’s a choice quote from Cincinnati Reds general manager Jim Bowden:

If players want to strike, they ought to just pick Sept. 11, because that’s what it’s going to do to the game. I don’t think there’s going to be a work stoppage. I don’t think anybody’s that dumb. If they do walk out, make sure it’s Sept. 11. Be symbolic. Let (Players’ Association leader) Donald Fehr drive the plane right into the building, if that’s what they want to do.

I appreciated Keith Olbermann’s response.

Barons of Bankruptcy

The Financial Times is running a series called Barons of Bankruptcy that examines how much cash was pocketed by executives of companies that have filed for bankruptcy over the past three years. Not surprisingly the list is headed by execs from the likes of Enron and Global Crossing. Global Crossing’s CEO alone made $512 million from 1999 until the time the company filed for bankruptcy. One can only hope that the miserable cult of CEO worshipping morons will be forever and utterly banished, but I find that unlikely. Here’s the short cut to a table containing the real dirt.

The Linux display question

I’ve gotten a truly astounding number of answers from people to my Linux question, some of which didn’t work and some of which I haven’t had the chance to try. I’ll get back to everybody individually, and post the solution here when I get to it. I just wanted everyone to know that your knowledge and research aren’t falling in the old bit bucket. Thanks.
