With the news today that the US government is considering using death squads in Iraq to take on the Sunni insurgency, it’s helpful to take a walk down memory lane. Billmon has some selected quotes to remind us (or educate us) on what the death squads in El Salvador wrought. However, this story makes me think about Honduras rather than El Salvador.

The current US ambassador to Iraq, John Negroponte, was instrumental in aiding and abetting death squad activity in Honduras as ambassador to that country in the early eighties. I thought it was too cynical to assume that Negroponte’s agenda would be similar for Iraq. Guess I underestimated these guys.
