God damn. I have to write something about this. I wandered on there this morning absentmindedly and thought I might try to buy, legitimately, a couple of tracks from there.
It turns out that these are DRM-ed so that they will only play in Windows Media Player, which I don’t like and won’t use; and can’t be copied onto any other medium. So I have to invest another twelve euros in a program to crack the DRM. What a stupendously futile waste of time and money.
I don’t understand where all the doom and gloomery surrounding the last.fm acquisition comes from to be honest. The last.fm founders are staying in control.
YouTube, del.icio.us, Flickr, Bloglines, reddit, LiveJournal have all been acquired with some degree of “OH NOES” from their users but time has shown that none of those services have really been adversely impacted by the acquisition.
I’m curious, why do you think last.fm will be any different?
I actually see this as a good thing too. I am just starting to get back in to last.fm after a year or so break and I was glad to see they were even still around; this helps ensure they will be for much longer.
